The 17 Best Slack Apps

While you might just think of Slack as the best way to send your work friends memes during the day, it’s much more than that. As a powerful collaboration tool, Slack offers a robust platform for organizations of any size to communicate both internally and externally. While it makes day-to-day messaging and communication easy (and fun), one of Slack’s best features is its integration capability through Slack apps. Third-party apps and integrations connect directly with Slack so you can streamline your workflow and complete tasks without ever leaving the platform. Whether you want to be reminded of an upcoming meeting or poll your teammates, one of Slack’s 2,400 apps can help.

To save you from sorting through the thousands of available add-ons, we’ve narrowed it down to the 17 best Slack apps to support whatever work you do.

How to install Slack apps

Finding and installing your favorite Slack apps is a simple process. First, open up Slack’s app Directory either directly here or within your Slack interface. If browsing within Slack, simply click on Add apps at the bottom the left-hand sidebar under the Apps heading. From here, you can search for the apps you need or browse the top apps installed across your company.

Once you find an app you want to install, all you need to do is click on it. This will start a chat with the app and provide you with any additional instructions (such as if you need to create an account to use the software).

If you’re browsing the Slack app Directory on a web browser, select the app you want to install and then click the green Add to Slack button on the app’s webpage. From there, follow any prompts to connect your account as needed. That’s all there is to it!

How much do Slack apps cost?

You might be wondering exactly how much all this added functionality is going to cost you.

If you have the free version of Slack, you can install up to ten apps to your workspace. If your organization has one of Slack’s paid plans, you’re able to install an unlimited number of apps. Of course, certain apps and services may require their own subscriptions and payments before you can use them in Slack, so ensure you check this out beforehand to avoid disappointment.

Now let’s start the list.

Zoom

As one of the key communication tools that skyrocketed to popularity over the last few years, Zoom’s integration with Slack makes perfect sense.

The Zoom Slack app lets you start Zoom meetings and phone calls from within a Slack channel or direct message. This is great for when you’re in the middle of chatting and collaborating with someone and want to jump on a call to elaborate on your ideas “in-person,” or if you’re on Slack while trying to organize your weekly meetings.

Using the /zoom slash command, you’re able to start a video and/or audio call that includes screen-sharing if needed — right from Slack. As long as you have a Zoom account, you can access and install this integration.

Google Calendar

Whether you find yourself chronically late for meetings or are simply looking to boost your overall organization skills, the Google Calendar Slack app can help.

It syncs your Google Calendar directly with Slack so you can view your daily schedule, get notification alerts when you have an upcoming meeting, respond to event invitations, receive updates on meeting and event details, and set your status to allow colleagues to know when you’re in a meeting (to name a few of its key features).

If you often find yourself wondering what your day looks like tomorrow, you can simply type in one of Google Calendar’s slash functions (/gcal today or /gcal tomorrow) to get a daily overview of your schedule.

Twitter

From social media managers and customer service agents to marketers, countless people across your business will find the Twitter for Slack app extremely valuable. This app lets users stay up to date on discussions happening on Twitter — especially those involving your own company.

Any time a Tweet is sent from your business’ Twitter account, the app will automatically update a designated Slack channel. You can also track any mentions of your username from other users so you’ll know whenever somebody is talking about your business. While obviously handy for your social media managers, this is also invaluable for your customer support team who can keep track of any questions or complaints directly from Slack. While the app doesn’t support private Twitter accounts, chances are any important Tweets related to your business will be from public accounts.

If you need to find an old Tweet or bring up an old Twitter conversation, the app lets you search for your Tweets and mentions from right within Slack.

Simple Poll

The number one Slack app for conducting polls and surveys, Simple Poll is used by more than 680,000 teams across the world. This add-on lets you create, share, and track polls and surveys within Slack. Instead of having time-consuming back and forths with your team when making decisions, quickly create a poll or survey in Slack using Simple Poll.

Whether you’re trying to decide where to go for your team lunch, or what day of the week to hold your all-hands meeting, Simple Poll helps you engage your team right from Slack.

When creating and sharing a poll, you can make it anonymous, create automatically recurring polls for repeat questions, let your team members add their own options, and see results in real-time. When it comes to creating surveys, you’re able to let individual team members respond privately and anonymously, send reminders to those who haven’t completed the survey, and add multiple questions within the same survey.

Simple Poll also has a number of shortcuts and slash commands, making the app even easier and quicker to use.

Figma

If you’re a designer or someone who regularly works with designers, there’s a good chance you’re already using Figma, the software where teams “create, test, and shop designs from start to finish.” The Figma app lets users stay up-to-date on all of their Figma files without leaving Slack.

With the Figma app team members can collaborate and reply to comments on Figma files, right from Slack. You can also receive notifications and updates whenever you’re tagged in a file, a teammate replies to something you’ve said in a file, new comments are added, or you’re invited to collaborate on a new Figma file. This comes in especially handy when you’re focused on your own projects and could easily miss changes made in a Figma file — changes that other team members could be waiting for you to respond to.

While you can’t yet design or edit files straight in the Figma Slack app, the notifications and updates it provides will undoubtedly save your team energy and countless hours of work.

Trello

With the Trello app for Slack, you’re able to boost communication and collaboration without having to constantly switch between the two platforms.

The best feature of the app is the ability to add new Trello cards to boards directly from Slack. This means you could be in a conversation with your team regarding a project and instantly add a relevant Trello card to your board, all from within your chat. In addition to seamlessly adding new cards, you can join Trello cards and board, change due dates, attach any appropriate conversations, and see automated card and board previews.

When you post a Trello link into your Slack channel, all members will be able to automatically see any key insights such as descriptions, comments, and members.

HubSpot

With the HubSpot for Slack app, you’re able to get all of your HubSpot tasks, notifications, and slash commands right in Slack.

The HubSpot Slack integration lets you create a task and associate it with a contact, company, or deal in HubSpot while still in Slack. When you get a message in Slack that you’d like to turn into a HubSpot task, all you have to do is hover over the message, hit the ‘More Actions’ option, and click ‘Add a Task in HubSpot.’ The task form will appear directly in Slack, meaning you won’t have to exit your chats and go into HubSpot to create a task. Plus, once your task is updated successfully, it’ll automatically sync with your HubSpot CRM.

In addition to creating tasks, you’re also able to receive HubSpot notifications in Slack thanks to this integration. You get to choose which notifications you want, and which you’re fine without. With the HubSpot for Slack app, you’re able to keep your day running smoothly, minimize disruptions, and increase productivity.

Donut

With more and more people working remotely, opportunities for coworkers to connect and get to know each other have dwindled. Enter: the Donut app for Slack.

Donut is used by more than 15,000 companies such as Okta, Zapier, and Gitlab as a way to facilitate relationships between teammates across departments. With Donut, coworkers are randomly paired and encouraged to meet virtually, whether for a quick coffee or a call.

Donut provides a template library so you can easily create a new Slack channel for a variety of purposes. For example, you can create a Donut channel for new hires, one for a recurring lunch and learn, or one specifically for fully remote employees. You can customize group sizes, frequency of messages, introduction messages, prompt discussions with watercooler topics, automatically welcome new teammates with a Donut channel, and get reports on how your team is connecting. With human connection more important than ever, the Donut app is a worthwhile addition to your Slack lineup.

Automate.io

If you’re looking to automate as much of your workflow as possible, the Automate.io Slack app can help. It lets you run workflows across more than 200 different CRM, Slack, and any Project Management apps, triggering specific workflows automatically when there are any changes or updates.

With a drag and drop interface, Automate.io requires no coding knowledge to get started. How does it work? The workflows in Automate.io are called Bots, and every Bot has a particular “trigger” and related “action.” The trigger lets your Bot know when it should start, and the action tells the Bot what to do. For example, a trigger could be something like “A new issue came in from Zendesk” and the resulting action would be “Add this as a task in Trello and send a Slack notification.”

With the Automate.io Slack integration, you’re able to create simple automation workflows — without relying on developers or your IT department.

Curious about how Automate.io stacks up with Unito? Here’s our full breakdown.

You’re able to review comments right in Slack, as well as approve any access requests.

If you want to share a Miro board with your team in Slack, copying and pasting the link to the channel or message will show the board’s name, description, and cover image — saving your team even more time.

Users can also post task previews right into Slack conversations. If you have multiple similar projects on the go, this can save you quite a bit of time when sending Wrike tasks to other team members. Everyone will be able to immediately tell what task or project you’re linking to, without having to open multiple links to check.
